My Back Pages

Welcome to my retirement home for old pages and links. I try to keep these up to date (?), but I may fall behind every now and then. Live with it!

I went over to Columbia, North Carolina, to the Annual Scuppernong River Festival to see the band in which my brother plays. It was great!! In spite of what you might read on some of the pages I post here, I have a tin ear. Fortunately, both of my brothers and my sister make up for it. Check the story out!! And check out the Weekends Only website!

We decided to go on another Caribbean cruise on Carnival Cruise Lines. We visited Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel on Carnival's newest ship. I also got to do some diving and we both had a lot of fun! Here we are on one of the formal nights. (Warning! This page is image-intensive.)

The marshes at Ocracoke Island are a refuge for several species of birds. Here's my wife checking some of them out under the full moon this summer. I got this photo just as the sun was setting behind me. Beautiful, isn't it? Check out our new photo gallery (which includes this shot) and kayaks page.

Taking a vacation... - Hey! Where is everyone? This is a crowded day at the beach on Ocracoke Island. Hang on...we're working on this page. We already have some info and pictures from Ocracoke Island, Colonial Williamsburg, the Cheers Bar, and whitewater rafting. We'll have some cruise pictures and some pictures from miscellaneous travels soon.

Interested in a good movie? I don't pretend to be a serious student of film, but I certainly enjoy them and try to sample a variety of artists and genres. I also try to learn more about the directors and their films both before and after viewing them. Here's a list of ten films that you may have overlooked and which I have found very rewarding. The most recent is Donnie Darko, released last year to great reviews and poor box office. Released last year on DVD, the movie continues to garner critical praise. I recommend it highly if you are interested in a film that requires some thought and multiple viewings.

Are you missing something and it's no longer on this page? You may not realize it, but I keep a page devoted entirely to links and pages that have been removed from this page. Just click on the picture to go to My Back Pages, where you can check out our recent trip to Charlotte, links to "American Pie" information, and more!!

Bear Island is a popular site at Hammocks Beach State Park in North Carolina. In preparation for an upcoming paddle out to Ocracoke Island, I spent the weekend solo camping on Bear Island. It gave me the chance to practice packing the kayak and maneuvering it with the extra weight. In fact, I spent my birthday there!

Tired of hearing about Orchestra Luna yet? I hope not. I just added two promotional photos of the group to my collection. PLUS, I have finally received two copies of the Japanese-issued CD of their eponymous album. Check them out....

Hey, kids! Want a great project for your Science Fair? Why not build an inductive telephone tap? It's easy, educational, and fun! Learn how to tap a standard telephone line with a technique that is virtually undetectable. Listen in on your teenage sister or to your parents while they talk to their "special friends." (Of course, that would be illegal, so this project is for "educational" purposes ONLY!)

Hey! Want a cheap and effective alternative to commercial deck and siding washes?I just power-washed and sealed my deck this weekend. The commercial deck washes are too expensive, so I came up with a home-brew alternative.

We took a trip to Charlotte. My wife and I went down to Charlotte recently to attend a wedding. On the way back, we noticed the sign for the North Carolina Vietnam Veterans War Memorial Park on I-85. We had never heard of the Memorial and stopped in to take a look. Coincidence followed coincidence after that...

Interested in a good read? You should be. Check out some of the suggested (and NOT suggested) books from my reading list. One of my all-time favorites is Alan Cromer's book, Uncommon Sense: The Heretical Nature of Science. Cromer discusses what true science is and why it is so difficult and such an unnatural activity for human beings. Unlike some similar books on the topic, Cromer strikes a marvelous balance between details and general observation. He keeps it accurate and complete, yet interesting. I read this every few months just to keep myself in my place.

Annotated "American Pie" This is everybody's favorite Rorschach test of a song. Read the ultimate set of annotations for this song by Rich Kulaweic. Don McLean won't comment on it, so your guess is as good as anybody's. ! Here's an alternate site, though I tend to agree with Rich's interpretations.
